Room heaters
Electrical room heaters can be electric fires, fan heaters, oil filled radiators, and panel heaters. Fan and convector heaters work by blowing hot air into the room, the heaters are usually used alongside storage heaters.
Electric heaters tend to have higher running costs.
- Typical running cost 3.6p - 8.3p per useful kilowatt hour
Mains gas fires are relatively cheap to run, however they are not very efficient conjunction unless they're used in conjunction with a central heating system.
- Typical running cost 4.6p - 6.43p per useful kilowatt hour
Bottled gas or LPG heaters are free standing and fuelled by refillable gas cylinders. They can be expensive and dangerous if used incorrectly and produce water vapour resulting in condensation if the room is not heated or ventilated adequately.
- Typical running cost 8.3p - 17.8p per useful kilowatt hour
Solid Fuel heaters can be either open or closed front. Modern solid fuel burn fossil fuels, and contain a damper to control the speed of burning and frequently create a focal point in a room.
- Typical running cost 4.07p - 8.23p per useful kilowatt hour

AJS Developments Home Boiler Installation & Replacement Service
AJS Developments - Staffordshire, Cheshire and Derbyshire
All boilers require servicing yearly to protect your investment and to make sure it is safe to use, protecting you and your family. AJS Developments Plumbing and Heating can carry out servicing on most makes and types of domestic boilers as per Corgi guidelines.
Eventually your boiler will need to be replaced whether this is due to old age or because it is impractical to repair, AJS Developments Plumbing and Heating can replace your existing boiler to your specifications or let us create you a bespoke and energy efficient system.
If your boiler is over 12 years old, it is likely to be only 65% efficient. Modern boilers tend to be over 80% efficient, while modern condensing boilers are up to 95% efficient. Boilers are rated according to their efficiency using the SEDBUK scale of A to G, with A being the most efficient. SEDBUK ratings for most boiler models can be found on the SEDBUK web site.
A modem condensing boiler with an efficiency in excess of 90% can save you both energy and money and reduce your greenhouse gas emissions to the environment.
A heating system that uses a condensing boiler with the correct heating controls can reduce your heating bills by as much as 40%!
Compliant with Central Heating System Specification (C.H.E.S.S) and Standard Assessment Procedure (S.A.P) working to "Benchmark" Standards.
Heating Controls
There are various controls for your heating and hot water systems that can help to ensure you are getting heat where and when you need it and that your system is operating as efficiently as it could be. The controls found on any one system will depend on the age, design and installation of the system.
Ideally your heating system should be able to sense and respond quickly to changing conditions and adjust the temperature of the property accordingly.
Turning down your room thermostat by just 1°C could save you up to 10% on your annual heating bills, around £25.
Important Safety Tips
All appliances need fresh air to burn safely. If there is not enough air circulation or if ventilation holes are blocked, gases collect and build up and carbon monoxide can be produced.
As it has no colour, no smell and no taste it is very difficult to detect. Ignoring the danger signs listed below could be fatal:
Stains around the appliance Yellowish coloured flame on your fire Strange smell from the appliance when switched on.
If anyone in your home has any of the following symptoms after using a gas appliance, turn off immediately and go to the doctor:
- Sickness
- diarrhoea
- Stomach pains
- Sudden dizziness on standing
- General tiredness
Ensure all appliances are checked regularly by a CORGI registered fitter.
Tenants:
Your Landlord is required by law to have the appliance checked once a year.
